The Canterbury College Extracurricular Dance program enables students to participate in a range of Dance ensembles. The program caters for students from Kindy to Year 12 inspiring dancers of all ability levels to strive for their full potential. Students are provided with technical training by qualified dance teachers in Jazz, Contemporary, Lyrical, Musical Theatre and Hip Hop dance styles.
Canterbury College offers private and small group dance tuition through the Arts Academy studio tuition program. These are designed to further student’s technical skill in a variety of genres and enhance their creative understanding of choreographic approaches. Aspiring dancers can also further their holistic understanding of Dance through Dance curriculum classes offered to students in Years 9 – 12.
Students who engage with the Dance program at Canterbury College are provided with opportunities to participate in workshops with guest artists challenging physical boundaries and performing professionally choreographed works.
We offer excursions to view live performances by well-respected dance companies and provide opportunities in the competitive dance domain and at community and school events. The great work of Canterbury College dancers is presented at our annual Night of Dance held in the Canterbury College Events Centre in November each year.
DANCE PERFORMANCE TEAMS
Canterbury College Dance performance teams compete at eisteddfods throughout Logan, Brisbane, Ipswich and the Gold Coast. The Eisteddfod experience enhances students’ performance skill, stage craft and love of dance. Our multi-award winning performance teams receive many placings for their outstanding performances throughout each eisteddfod season within Junior, Middle and Senior years’ sections in a variety of dance genres. Our teams have gained respect and recognition in the wider community with invitations to perform at the Brisbane Performing Arts Challenge Gala Concert and the Beenleigh Quota Eisteddfod Society 30th Anniversary Concert.
Positions in Dance Performance Teams are awarded by audition only. Auditions are held at the end of Term 4 for existing Canterbury College students and in Term 1 for students new to the College.

Canterbury Dance Artists Years 7 – 12
The Canterbury Dance Artists program is our elite dance performance team. The Artists program extends gifted and talented dancers beyond their studio practice through opportunities to work closely with guest artists performing work choreographed by industry professionals in cutting edge styles. Dance Artists are pushed to challenge their creative and physical boundaries through participation in collaborative choreographic tasks and experimenting with different ways of moving extending these talented students to a level of excellence.
Positions in the Canterbury Dance Artists program are awarded by invitation to students identified as Gifted and Talented in Dance.
Canterbury Dance Company Years 7 - 12
Canterbury Dance Company are the College’s premier representative Dance performance team. Canterbury Dance Company has a focus on student’s technical dance ability in Jazz, Contemporary, Lyrical and Musical Theatre dance styles. Students learn and polish routines for performance at dance eisteddfods, community and school based events. Through participation in Canterbury Dance Company students enhance performance skill, technical skill and gain confidence through teamwork.
Hip Hop Crew Years 7 – 12
The Hip Hop Crew caters for students with a specific interest in the Hip Hop genre of dance. Students learn choreography and skills in a variety of Hip Hop styles working to enhance performance skill, body control and musicality. Choreography for Hip Hop performances pieces is created by students encouraging student to share ideas, work collaboratively and take on leadership roles. Hip Hop Crew compete at eisteddfods and perform at community and school based events.
Middle School Dance Ensemble Years 7 – 10
Middle School Dance Ensemble is a development team that prepares students for entry into Canterbury Dance Company. This group work to develop technical and performance skill in the Jazz and Contemporary dance genres. Middle School Dance Ensemble compete at eisteddfods and perform at community and school events enhancing their performance skill and stage craft.
Positions in Middle School Dance Ensemble are open to all interested students in Years 7 – 10.
Junior Dance Company Years 4 – 6
Junior Dance Company are the Junior School’s representative Dance performance team. Students in Junior Dance Company focus on developing technical dance skill in Jazz, Contemporary and Funk dance styles. Students learn and polish routines for performance at dance eisteddfods, community and school based events. Through participation in Junior Dance Company students develop performance skill, technical skill and gain confidence through teamwork.
DANCE DEVELOPMENT ENSEMBLES:
Junior Steppers Years 4 – 6
Junior Steppers is open to students of all abilities in Years 4 -6. These students participate in basic dance technique development and learn dance routines for performance at our annual Night of Dance.
The Kindy Dance program is a semester long program which teaches students basic dance technique, musicality and coordination. Kindy dancers are provided with opportunities to perform at school based events such as Grandparents Day.
