Launched in 2022 the Canterbury Drone Academy will focus on developing skills and knowledge to assist students with using Drones both in and out of the classroom.

The academy will meet every Monday afternoon during Term-Time from 3:30pm – 4:30pm.

ALL students from Years 5 – 12 are most welcome, but those from younger year levels can also participate to help build their skills and gain confidence.

Students will have the opportunity to build their skills to either compete in Australia’s Drone Competitions or gain their Cert III in Aviation and Remote Pilots License.

Students will also have full independent access to the Australian Unmanned Systems Academy (AUSA) interactive e-Learning platform with full lecture content and presentations to support learning during and outside class times.

The Taipans Roboneers is Canterbury’s Robot Engineers Club.

Meetings are held every Tuesday and Friday afternoon during Term-Time from 3:30pm – 4:30pm at the Digital Hub in the Senior Library.

ALL students from Years 5 – 9 are welcome to join.

Students will explore robotics and engineering using the Lego Education EV3 system to create, develop and code robots, while participating in fun challenges and learning new skills.

This club also aims to encourage the growth of Future Schools skills such as – Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking and Digital Literacy.

The First Lego League team consists of students from the Canterbury Taipans Roboneers club.

The club meets every Tuesday and Friday afternoon during Term-Time from 3:30pm – 4:30pm at the Digital Hub in the Senior Library.

ALL students from Years 5 – 9 are welcome to join.

The team represents the College in the FIRST Lego League Challenge.

The program is run during Term 3 and 4 and has a semester-long commitment.

Students will work as a team to complete the three elements of this program – Robot Game, Project and Core Values.

Students apply their knowledge of constructing and programming LEGO® robots to create ‘Sumo Bots’ – strong robots capable of pushing other robots out of the battle ring.

To meet the challenge, groups follow engineering design process steps and consider robot structure, weight and gear ratios in their designs, to make their robots push as hard as possible and to force robot opponents out of the ring.

Robots are tested to determine the best methods, illustrating the interrelationships between design, building and programming.

League members will also learn about data, and utilising sensors to program their sumo robot to stay in the game, while attacking or defending against opponents.

This activity allows students to be creative and have fun applying and combining what they have learned in previous sessions.

Constructing and programming Sumo Bots involves a physical design component and a programming component, thus requiring students to consider multiple parameters and numerous approaches in their designs.

Nevertheless, engineers tackle similar challenges routinely and devise excellent and creative solutions!

Whether designing a program for the Mars Rover or designing to construct vehicles relying on power and torque – such as bulldozers and tractors, engineers follow the engineering design process steps, to create optimal and successful products and solutions for specific challenges.

Meetings are held on Tuesdays from 7:15am – 8:15am at the Digital Hub.
